What We Do
We apply open-source software, open-data standards, and extensive experience and expertise in the field to create a solid foundation for successful Digital Humanities projects.
Performant works on projects of all sizes. Whether you're embarking on a solo research initiative or building a full-blown digital archive, we can craft a solution to meet your project's unique needs, timelines, and budget.
Our Services
01
Software Development
We're strong believers in thoughtful and selective application of technology, and we work in close collaboration with our scholarly partners. That means the software we build is co-designed with its expert users to support and enhance established patterns of humanistic scholarship. We are well versed in widely used DH software tools, practices, and standards, and we’re good at bringing innovations from other domains to bear on challenges unique to the humanities. We never take a one-size-fits-all approach. Where we can reuse existing patterns or code, we do; where we can’t, we build things from scratch.

User Experience Design
Whether we’re designing a specialized tool for the world’s foremost single expert in an esoteric field or an interface that will be used by thousands worldwide every day, we start from an understanding of our audiences and their objectives, create rapid wireframes and refine them through conversations, and finally design and build delightful, easy-to-use experiences that are at once familiar, intuitive, and innovative. Our clients’ data, ideas, and scholarship are some of the most fascinating, beautiful, and enlightening content anywhere; our designs put that content front and center, optimizing for accessibility and ease of use.

Team Augmentation
We love collaborating not only with scholars but with other DH developers. Our developers can be embedded in development teams to supplement their capacity and skillsets.

Project Management
Successful projects rely on close attention to schedule and budget and constant monitoring of progress against requirements, relative to budget expenditure. Careful planning of project phases and sequence, cadence of feature development, and early identification of risks are all part of delivering a successful solution. Our project management process is designed for success and refined through our many years of experience in the field to meet the challenges unique to the Digital Humanities: collaboration across areas of expertise, a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods and data, and an imperative to keep learning from one another all the time.

Grant Proposal Support
We have extensive experience helping our partners develop proposals for Digital Humanities grants. We start from a thorough understanding of the scholarly goals of a project and bring our understanding of software to bear, selecting appropriate technologies, envisioning how they can be extended and integrated to accelerate and enhance traditional scholarship, and putting a winning argument into lucid, readable prose. We’ve participated in many successful funding efforts, helping our partners secure support from dozens of grant-making programs, many of them highly competitive, peer-reviewed competitions.

Strategy
How can software support, accelerate, and enhance your scholarship? What is the state of the art in your field in terms of standards, practices, and tools? Can we adopt existing solutions to meet your needs, or do we need to build something new? Would a minimal computing approach be appropriate at this juncture? We can analyze your requirements and recommend a path forward that works within your timeline and budget and doesn’t reinvent the wheel.
